Starting PUPD with 8 month old breastfed baby

Hi.
I'm in need of a bit of support with my 8 month old baby Daithí.
He was a great sleeper up until he was 3-4 months old and since then has gradually developed into a frequent waker. I seem to have accidentally parented him into waking approx every 2 hours at which stage I have been breastfeeding him back to sleep (path of least resistance! I know, sorry now!) Don't know when last he slept for longer than three hours.
I've tried breastfeeding him more during the day but he won't take it - excluding first morning feed and bedtime feed he has just one small milk feed per day. He's on three good solid meals a day though and drinks water too.
So we started 2 nights ago with PUPD and feeding him at 11ish, 3ish and after 6.30am. We moved him out of our room last week.
A few questions - how soon can I drop the 3am feed? I'm afraid he won't have time to adjust to taking more during the day and will be hungry at night. Or am I just giving him mixed signals feeding him at some wakenings and not others?
Also - not sure how much picking up to be doing.. Should I leave him crying in the cot if he's not screaming? Can I settle him on my shoulder or does he have to be lowered to the mattress the second he stops crying? I'm not happy to do CC or leave him alone in the room crying. Another thought I had was would it be better to get him out of the feeding habit first and pace/rock him to sleep and then do PUPD in a couple of weeks. Is the not being fed likely to be enough to stop him waking??
Any pointers would be oh-so-very gratefully received! Thanks so much.
