Where to start?

Hello! I am Mum to a 4 year old daughter and 9 month old William. Unfortunately my 9 month old is, and always has been, a terrible sleeper. Due to my husband being away from home shortly after William was born and a fair bit thereafter, and also in an effort to ensure my daughter didn't wake up (she started school this year and had just turned 4 and I haven't wanted to send her to school tired!) we have got into some bad habits. We have half term week next week and we are determined to sort out William's sleep as my husband is home . I just wanted some advice on how to approach the sleep training.

Our current routine goes like this:
Somewhere between 5-6.45am: William wakes up, usually full of life and smiles
7.00am Breakfast
9.15ish: BF followed by morning nap of between 30mins - 1hr
12.00: Lunch
13.00 ish: BF followed by lunchtime nap of between 1hr - 1hr 30
17.00:Dinner
18.00: Bedtime routine. Last step is BF baby to sleep
During the night, he will be up usually 4 times and I BF him back to sleep on each occasion. He has never slept more than a 4 hour stretch and usually 2-3 hours at a time is the best he does.

My main question is, am I best just going cold turkey on the breast feeding at night and do controlled crying? Also, do I tackle naps or nighttime first and is it alright to BF for naps but not at nighttime or will I just confuse him? Ideally I want to stop breastfeeding but we can't get William to take a bottle.

Thank you in advance for any replies! Sarah
