Sleep Problems

Henry has always been a bad sleeper. He had reflux and colic early on and wouldn’t sleep unswaddled. We stopped swaddling him at 4 months as he was able to roll over. He used to rely on a dummy to sleep but after trying pu/pd at 4 ½ months he no longer takes it.

Henry is not very good at self settling and I think this stems from early on where we used to rock/cuddle/feed to sleep as it was the only way we could get some rest from the screaming! I should add that I am breastfeeding with one bottle of formula a day.
He often wakes up after one sleep cycle (45 minutes) or 2 or 3. Sometimes he’ll wake up every 45 minutes all night and can be very difficult to settle, but he has been known to sleep 3 or 4 hours consecutively. He is nearly 23Ibs so doing pu/pd all night is not sustainable I don’t think as I end up getting a bad back.

Since 7 ½ months I have been trying to get him into a routine.

7am Milk
8am breakfast
9.30 – 10. start nap
12pm Lunch
2pm Nap
3pm Milk
4pm (sometimes a snack)
5pm Dinner
6.30pm bath, milk then put down in cot and sssh pat until he falls asleep (this usually takes 10 minutes). This has recently changed to bath, milk, story, nursery rhyme, put down in cot awake say ‘I love you, sleep well darling’ and walk out the room.

A few weeks ago after an unsuccessful nap and screaming, I had to walk out the room to get a breather. Within 10 minutes he was asleep. I have started doing this for naps and bedtime and he usually falls asleep fairly easily with minimal crying and only maybe twice a week having to do ssh pat. The problem I have now is when he wakes up during the night, leaving him wont settle him and he becomes hysterical and I end up in the trap of feeding to sleep or bringing him into bed with me. For 2 weeks I tried to not feed him sooner than 4 hours after the last feed, but recently it has all gone wrong again. He’s had a few viruses and 4 of his top teeth look like they are going to pop through soon. My husban
