9 month old still waking 2 - 5 times a night

Hi
Our first baby has just turned 9 months and although he is everything we could have wished and more, we did think that his sleeping would be much better by now!

We have had a set bedtime routine since he was 6 weeks old (bath, massage and bottle). He eats 3 meals a day but is variable with how much he eats and is very firm when he doesn't want anymore. He wakes at 7.30am and has milk following his solid breakfast. He has a morning nap at ~10am for 1 - 1.5hrs. Lunch at 12.30pm followed by milk. Afternoon nap at 2.15pm for 1.5hrs. Afternoon milk at 4 - 4.30pm. He has dinner at 6.30pm and bath and bed at 7.15pm. He is usually asleep by 8pm. He is full of energy and this routine works well for us. But, he wakes up at night between midnight and 1am for a feed (which we are slowly trying to reduce) and after that it is pretty variable. He may sleep till 6am (only happened twice) or wake up between 2 and 6 times a night.

We have slowly managed to cut a lot of bad habits. He didn't have a daytime nap in his cot till 5 months old. Till 7 months old he had 3 night feeds. We used to rock him to sleep or he used to sleep on the bottle. He also used to sleep in our bed after 4.30am as we got so exhausted. This has all stopped. In the last 2 weeks, he has learnt how to fall asleep by himself when put in his cot. When he wakes in the night, we now rarely pick him up but just gently pat him which usually works but I think he is getting used to this. I did try letting him cry last week (when we were still trying to get him to fall asleep on his own) and after 10 minutes he was so upset that he vomited his whole post-bath feed and it took 1.5 hrs to re-bath him and calm him down, it was awful! We can handle some crying/whimpering but if he gets very upset, we will go to him anyway and surely he will learn that we will come if he cries a lot.

We are going to move him to his own room in one week when my husband is off work but am concerned we may still be getting up a lot.
