all-night horrors

Well well, we're back again. We'd just about got into a routine that involved a single, manageable night feed at 4am, though his daytime napping is still erratic. However, last night he woke up screaming - not crying, not complaining but screaming - at 10.30, 12, 1.30, 4 and 5.15. The only thing that would calm him was a feed - though he only really took any milk at 4am. The night before, he woke at 10.30 too with the same problem, but that time he slept till 4 after we'd fed him.
We tried shushing , rocking, ignoring him, nothing else worked. He doesn't appear to be teething because he'd normally be gnashing on his fists or drooling, and he seems fine in the daytime.
What's odd is that he seems to be asleep through most of this. When I changed his nappy at 5.15 this morning he woke up and seemed calmer, though he hasn't gone back to sleep since. We tried gently waking him but he was too upset to notice and we'd have had to make a loud noise or startle him awake somehow, which we didn't want to do. Any idea what the hell is going on? Or, more importantly, what we can do? Last night was without doubt his worst night since birth. Help! (again) Chris
