My 2 years old not staying in bed from bedtime

we need help!!

Our son been in bed since August and so far putting him to bed at bedtime he have been pretty good staying in there all night until 5am. However since Monday night, he been coming down the stairs and we are having to keep putting him back to bed but no matter how many times I do it he just keep coming down and i just think he not going to learn. First night worked by my husband closing gate in front of him which he hates but this was after 1 and half hours of taking him back to bed!!

The next night wasnt too bad as only came down twice and was happy to have his milk bottle on a top shelf in his bedroom!!!

However, tonight seem to be worse night so far. He again refuses to stay in his bed and just seem worse he won't let me carry him to bed. We tried the gate a couple of times but he just get himself more upset and worked up. He came downstairs just standing at bottom of stairs saying "no, no, no" not sure why he saying that as we not even looking at him. So we using "ignore him" technique but it doesn't work either. So we closed the gate again but knowing it be worse. At this time it getting nearly to 8.30 from putting him to bed at 7. So I just sat here thinking with all the upset and crying he not going to go to sleep being punish so that when i thought i go up calm him down by holding him then put him down to bed, sit next to him stroking his hair to keep calming him down. Then stop after a couple of mins and stay with him for a bit longer no more than a couple mins and walk out of the room. Did I do the right thing? He has now been quiet for 20 mins or more while I am writing on this forum.

Please can you give us advice to what we can do if he does this tomorrow night? Not sure my method of calming him and stroking was the right thing to do?
