First time mum and biological scientist by training. When not on maternity leave, working as a Patent Attorney (basically a cross between a scientist and a lawyer). Happily married to my husband James (an IT manager) and together we are trying to get a handle on this whole parenting malarkey!
I have been exclusively breastfeeding my son, and had (painful!) problems initially so that was basically my sole focus for the first few months. After that, once I had the breastfeeding sorted, I suddenly realised "Oh - isn't he supposed to be having naps at some point?!?" Basically I was feeding on demand, and he was falling asleep at the breast, so he had no routine at all. We then struggled to wing it without one, trying to put him down for naps when he was tired. We then got to the point where he would usually only sleep on me at night rather than in his cot. Hence we turned to "The BAby Sleep System" to try to sort things out...

Early days and really pleased but...

We were in a mess. Xander has been exclusively breast-fed, and has thrived (he's a big boy near 91st percentile!). The problems: we had got to the point where he would not sleep in his cot at night and so would spend the night on me; he would not consistently (i.e. with predictable timings and duration) nap during the day except for a half hour nap at roughly 10 am in his cot whilst I used the hair dryer (!); a month or two ago he managed a couple of five hour stints during the night, but otherwise would go for 3 or4 hours tops.

Since Friday night we have been using PUPDCD and he has been sleeping in his cot every night with surprisingly little crying involved (we haven't really ever made it into phase 2, and only on the 1st night has he done 2 cry downs in one cycle). So I am EXTREMELY happy and suddenly find myself with time in the evenings!! Thank you!

We set up a routine which involves waking at 7.30 am and bed routine starting at 7 pm, for various reasons. We followed the book and so pencilled in a 1 1/2- 2 hr nap in the early afternoon, but unfortunately he has not read the book as he sleeps for 45 minutes max at any nap time. He has only ever had long naps a handful of times during the day, and that has generally involved falling asleep late afternoon to the extent of interfering with his betime.

Perhaps because of this, he keeps getting very grouchy and tearful around 6pm every night, so we start his night routine about 30 mins early and then he falls asleep at the breast, where I can't wake him (except by laying him in his cot!). He wakes at 6.30 am-ish in the morning.

So should we alter his planned routine to take account of his earlier preferred bedtime and rising time? Or is there some magic way to get him to take a long nap (if he falls asleep in the push chair or car then he wakes as soon as the vehicle stops moving)?

I haven't started weaning him yet as I was inhibited by the current 6 mth recommendation, but I plan to start this weekend.
