Cot to bed transition

It's been a while since my last post but i'm in serious need of advice.

My son was two last week and on Christmas Eve we moved him into a bed after a few climbing out of cot incidents! First week in the bed he was angelic- went to bed no problems, stayed in bed all night and was getting up after 7am which is unheard of!

New Year's Day it all changed. He wanted me or his daddy to lie next to him when we put him to bed until he fell asleep or dismissed us! He wakes up in the early hrs, gets out of bed and cries at the gate on his door. He goes back to bed when asked but is up again a few times and then screams from his bed for us. He takes ages to drift back off to sleep again even when we lie next to him.

Our problem is we just don't know which avenue to take! Will we create later problems if we continue to lie next to him to get to sleep? Shall we be tough and just keep taking him back to bed and let him cry it out? We have no problems doing either but at the moment we are doing a mixture of the two and think this may be confusing him!

Help gratefully accepted!!!

Yippee!!Well finlay was in size 5+ nappies so we moved him to size 6 last night and he slept the night through and didn't mind the light being turned off! He did go swimming late afternoon and so was pretty tired but hopefully the nappy size change has done the trick!
