When to start 4 to 6 months routine?

Hello again. I followed the brilliant advice given to me and started to do some sleep training sometime ago with Cormac (who is now 16 weeks) and his night time sleep really improved for a while.
We still had a few nights every so often during which he wakes more regularly than he should. But mostly he is waking once about 2 or 3 and then again abour 6 or 7 which feels really managable.
However, Cormac turned 16 weeks last monday and so I started to try and impliment the new routine outlined in 'Baby Sleep Systems' (16 to 24 weeks). We done it for 5 days now and I'm afriad we are both finding it really hard and as such I'm wondering if perhaps he is not ready for it. He finds it hard to wait 4 hours between feeds in the day and gets really miserable around the 3 hour mark (I'm still breast feeding). I have been managing to make him wait just about but its difficult and I feel a bit mean. Also he is now waking more regularly at night too. Every 3 to 4 hours sometimes more frequently, Making both our nights a bit miserable with a teary baby . Is it normal for a baby's sleep to suffer when you adjust their routine? If so how long will it last? Or should I go back to the old routine (for 6 to 16 weeks) for a while and try again in a couple of weeks? I look forward to hearing your wise words.
