Irregular naps and night-time waking

Hi

James goes to sleep just fine after bath and feed at 7pm but wakes between 11.30pm and 2.30am for a feed. Typically he goes to sleep again after (though lately that seems to be less of a certainty) then wakes up again at about 3.30am. He'll then be bright as a button whether he's fed or not and stay awake for at least an hour, after which I usually need to walk him around for 20 minutes to get him to sleep. He's then down for 45mins max and up again at 5.15am. And that's him up for the day. He does nap, but irregularly and usually after a feed. He used to go to sleep on the breast but doesn't so much now. We sense that if we could sort out the daytime naps we'd have fewer problems at night. Is that true? Or should we be doing something else? I think part of the problem is that we don't always recognise his "tired signs" and leave it too late, by which time he's overtired and a little hysterical. What should we be looking for. Sorry, there's about four questions buried in that lot...
