How do I get my son to sleep at naptime in the day?

We purchased the baby sleep book 2 weeks ago after many sleepless nights, because Joseph would not sleep in his own bed without lots of rocking and then waking up pretty much straight away. 2 weeks ago we therefore moved Joseph into his own room, started a new sleep routine which consists of bath, change, feed, story then bed (we put him down in his cot awake). This usually starts about 6.45pm. We usually have to use the PUPD technique to get him to sleep.

He then usually wakes up between midnight and 2am, and then 4.30am - 5.30am which is when we feed him and use PUPD to settle him (both times). He usually then wakes up about 7.30 am, which is when we get up. We have however had a couple of nights where he had slept straight through after the 2am feed. The PUPD takes on average 20 mins. This is therefore much improved since where we were 2 weeks ago. Is it right that I should be up twice in the night feeding?

We are however finding it difficult to settle Joseph in the day for a nap in his own bed. I usually go out in a morning (in the car or in the pram for a walk) so he usually sleeps then (this is between 10.00 and 11.00.). When I try and settle him for a nap in the afternoon in his cot, he screams and screams whether in his cot or if I pick him up. The last few days I have tried over a period of an hour to settle him in his cot (using PUPD method) but he won't sleep. He then seems to be really grizzly until we put him to bed (obviously tired). I try to put him down when he is showing signs of tiredness i.e. rubbing ears/eyes or when he appears tired because he is crying. What else can I do to get him to sleep in the day?
