Day routine....how flexible can you be?

We'd like to start putting a day routine together to help with naps etc. How rigid does this day routine have to be....for example if we have a baby group to go to are we ok breaking the routine to attend? The same applies for weekends....what if we want a lie in and baby is still asleep?
