I am a full-time mother to three boys. The eldest is 13 so thankfully no sleep issues there! The next is 2.5 and we used the Sleep System to fix his sleep problems as a baby, though he still occasionally wakes in the night now. The youngest is nearly 1. He self-settles and naps fine but wakes in the night (any time 4-5.30am) wanting feeding and doesn't always go back to sleep. So here I am again!

Teaching self-settle with an older child around

Hi, I used this website successfully with my older child's problems settling to sleep & night feeding. I now have a 5 week old and, surprise surprise, sleeping problems with the new one.

He is 5 weeks old, full-term and a healthy weight. He feeds really quickly & I have a fast flow so he breastfeeds for about 5-10mins and then goes 2hrs on average til the next feed. In the night he wakes & feeds 2 or 3 times after a dream feed at 10-11ish. He can be quite windy/colicy. We have a bedtime routine with bath etc established.

He cannot self-settle. Generally he has been feeding to sleep in the evening, sometimes setlling by 8, often later. He feeds to sleep in the night but if still awake I just sit up in bed holding him, no rocking just darkness, and he goes to sleep on his own on me (I usually fall asleep too). In the early hours (post-5am) he will not re-settle in his moses basket at all. He sleeps til 6.30-7ish.

In the day he cannot go to sleep without jigging around while holding him, usually only for 5-10mins, but have to stay holding him. Often this is in a sling and I'm starting to get back-ache. If he seems really asleep and I put him down carefully in his moses basket, he always wakes within a minute or 2. He'll sleep fine in the car/pram.

Tried PUPD for bedtime for 3 days & it's worked after about 1-1.5hrs. Tried it this morning for his 1st nap & it was awful - 1hr really crying, & every time put down in the basket starting again. He got overtired in the end. I fed & rocked him to sleep. But I have a 2yr old & my husband's back at work tomorrow so I can't do PUPD in the day except when the 2yr old's asleep. And I really need some structure in the day. I'm tired & getting v low. I really want to enjoy this time & know how lucky I am but it's hard. I don't want to do CC with such a little one.

What can I do to teach the baby to self-settle & stay settled in the day while also looking after a toddler?
